In many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, education systems operate in conditions of constant uncertainty—shaped by climate shocks, conflict, and public health crises. These disruptions are often layered, creating a “polycrisis” that challenges the ability of systems to sustain learning over time. Yet across GPE partner countries, systems are not only reacting—they are adapting, improvising, and, in some cases, transforming.
Drawing on a cross-country desk review, this article highlights how resilience is understood in different contexts, the critical role of communities, and the need to move beyond short-term coping toward long-term transformation. Building resilient education systems is essential to safeguarding learning, advancing equity, and ensuring that progress is not undone by future shocks.
