Our research includes

Six lines of inquiry

Select a theme to see what we investigate.

Resilience measurement and analysis

Studying how the concept of resilience is contextually understood, measured and prioritized by communities, and examining how historical marginalisation, conflict, environmental pressures and socio-economic inequalities shape community resilience.

Climate and food systems

Investigating climate-smart agriculture, integrated risk management, food security and renewable energy solutions.

Humanitarian and development programming

Evaluating interventions in fragile settings, including South Sudan and Somalia.

Digital inclusion and identity

Assessing how digital identity systems, implementation approaches and digital literacy affect access and inclusion.

Gender and social inclusion

Using participatory methods, including photovoice, to document the experiences of marginalised groups and inform responses to gender-based violence and other social challenges.

Foresight analysis research

Conducting research and futuristic/foresight analysis processes that help countries better anticipate and respond to emerging system disruptions.

Strengthening African research

Building the capacity to generate and apply knowledge

Through initiatives such as LASER-PULSE, RTAC, DIEM Open Science grants and ARESRO, RAN has championed research capacity building and equitable partnerships, and is instrumental in supporting African universities and research institutions in generating and applying contextual knowledge to inform strategies or initiatives as solutions to their challenges.
